Wedding Dress Shopping: How to Have a Positive Experience, No Matter What Your Size!

Not my dress but such a pretty one! I think you can tell by my face that I was genuinely having fun!

As a plus size bride, I was a little anxious to go shopping for my wedding dress. I’ve read the horror stories about bridal shops not carrying bigger sizes, asking brides if they’re going to lose weight for the wedding, & more. I’ve worked on my relationship with my body for the past few years, but I worried how shopping for a wedding dress would affect me.

I’m happy to report that I had the most wonderful experience! I went to David’s Bridal with my mom & sister in tow. I had the sweetest stylist named Ansleigh, who made me feel so comfortable throughout the appointment. She was so friendly & helpful; I also appreciated her mindfulness when it came to discussing sizes & how the dress fit my body.

If you’re a bride of any size I have a few suggestions to help make sure that wedding dress shopping is a positive experience.

  • Take care of your mind & body leading up to your appointment. I had a session with my therapist a few days beforehand & I can’t recommend that enough! We were able to talk through any concerns that I had, reinforce coping skills, & it helped me get in a good mindset to try on wedding dresses for the first time. I also made sure I ate breakfast the morning of & wore a dress to my appointment that I felt really comfortable in.
  • Bring uplifting people to your appointment. It was important to me to have this special day with my mom & sister; my appointment was just the three of us & I wouldn’t have had it any other way!
  • Reach out to the bridal salon ahead of time. Ask them about the sizes they have in store to make sure that you’ll be able to try dresses on! This really put my mind at ease as a plus size person. Hopefully in the near future bridal salons will all be size inclusive, but in the meantime it helps to ask!

I’m so happy that I was able to find my wedding dress, & so relieved that it was such a positive experience. Are you shopping for your wedding dress? Let me know if you try any of these tips!

Everyone deserves to feel celebrated & worthy of finding a beautiful wedding dress!

Love,

Danielle
